The renowned actress and filmmaker has declared she is “furious” that progress for female directors in Hollywood have reversed after a short-lived surge of improvement post the MeToo movement.

The Twilight star, who helmed the forthcoming film her latest project, delivered an emotional address at a female-focused event in Los Angeles hosted by the Oscars organization.

“The backsliding from a brief moment of advancement is alarming by the numbers,” she told the audience. “A disappointingly low figure of films from the past year have been made by women.”

An annual report that tracks the presence of female filmmakers revealed that 11 of the highest-grossing films of last year were directed by women, down from sixteen in the year 2020.

‘Male-Dominated Industry Model’

In her address, Stewart remarked: “In a post-MeToo moment, it seemed possible that stories made by and for women were finally getting their due. That we might be allowed or even supported to share our views and our common stories, all of our experiences without filter.

“But I can now attest to the bare-knuckle brawling that it requires at each stage when the material is too dark, too taboo, when the honesty with which it serves up observations about situations commonly faced by females, frequently provokes aversion and dismissal.”

She continued: “We can talk about wage gaps and taxes on tampons and measure [inequality] in lots of quantifiable ways. But the act of muting voices, it’s like we’re not even supposed to be angry. But I can eat this podium with a fork and [expletive] knife. I’m furious.”

Attendees listening to Stewart’s address included a number of well-known female stars.

Stewart was met with several rounds of applause during the duration of her seven-minute speech.

“I am thankful to you,” she stated. “I do not thank a boys’ club business model that claims to desire to associate with us while draining our assets and diminishing our genuine viewpoints. We must avoid being used as tokens. Let’s start printing our own currency.”

New films from a few women filmmakers are among those for the forthcoming Oscars race, but the top directing award is once again expected to be dominated by men.
